Practice Self Defense from Yourself

In the beginning of Reality Based Self Defense Training we learn ways of surviving violence from OUTSIDE of ourselves. We practice effective methods for dealing with muggings, car jackings and home invasions. If you’re a law enforcement officer, you’ll practice ways to apprehend a perpetrator, if you’re a infantryman you’ll practice MOUT (Military Operations in Urban Terrain) house clearing drills. This is as it should be.

However, we also have to practice surviving violence from the INSIDE as well. If you’ve survived a real life violent encounter you may suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) or Survivor Guilt. Even though in the past, you physically survived the combat encounter, now, in the present you are psychologically suffering. In essence you are combating yourself.

Just as we need skillful means to deal with attacks outside of ourselves, we also need ways to deal with the violence inside ourselves. One of the most powerful ways to do that is through the use of Neuro-​​Linguistic Programming (NLP). For instance, what if the phrase “Why me?” is looping in your mind. Why are you the sole survivor of an attack by the enemy? Why did you survivor the car crash and not your friend? If you have disempowering self talk, you can take control of that just like a movie director and editor takes control of their film.Whenever the “why me” loop starts, make it go faster, then slower, make the voice sound like your favorite comedian or the celebrity you’re most a attracted to, that should radically change your state for the better. A truly complete system of self defense HAS TO include methods for protecting yourself from yourself.
