“Fit for Office” Workout Crosses Party Lines to Burn Calories

"Fit for Office" Workout

The presidential election is a month away, and we are only going to get more sick of the candidates’ ads. So why not turn off the TV and take your frustration out at the gym? Towne Sports, with clubs in Boston (BSC), New York (NYSC), Philadelphia (PSC) and Washington, DC (WSC), created an amazingly fun, and amazingly challenging, new “Fit for Office” group fitness class.

I sampled the 55-minute election-themed circuit class that whips gym-goers into shape across all party lines. We warmed up in “The Primary,” then we hit muscle and cardio circuits with equipment like kettle bells for “Swing States,” the BOSU for “Balance the Budget,” battle ropes in “Battle Ground States,” and high steps for “Get on your Soapbox,” on 10 stops of the “Campaign Trail.”

Next you “Find a Running Mate” and grab a partner to “band together” with tubing moves, perform partner push-up claps and “Pass the Buck” with a medicine ball.  The instructor whistled to move us onto each one-minute circuit stop, and encouraged us by shouting “Do it for your country!” He had us repeat both circuits twice, and at the end we “Stretch the Truth” in the cool down and stretch portion. The fun convention-like posters around the room remind you of your station and provide a laugh with the fun names of the moves. The class was so tough, that by the end of the first trip through the campaign trail, even my knees were sweating!  The masks of the candidates made the boxing portion a new experience and you could take out your frustration on both candidates!

With tongue-in-cheek circuit stations  and an election-themed music playlist that included  Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen, American Girl by Tom Petty, and Firework by Katy Perry, this class is sure to make you smile and give you the Paul Ryan abs or Michelle Obama arms you desire.
