Military boot camp training without the Uniform?
In the 90’s, workouts were all about machines. Elliptical, rowing, Wii-type simulated boxing, and treadmills that allowed you to mindlessly surf the ‘net or pay your taxes while “exercising”…and barely breaking a sweat.
The beginning of the 21st century saw us turning inward and outdoors, as yoga, tai chi and other “feel good” workouts became all the rage.
The routine of machines, and tapping into your inner space has a place in overall fitness, but sometimes people really do want to sweat, test their limits and really get in shape. That’s why we’re seeing a resurgence in the popularity of good old-fashioned military training (which never went out of style in the U.S. Armed Forces). This all-inclusive, intense mode of exercise has been used by the military to prep soldiers for combat since the mid-1900s.
Most commonly called “fitness boot camp,” or “military bootcamp training,” this typically outdoor group exercise class can be found in most larger cities now, alongside Yellow Page listings for exercise classes.
Do You Think Military Bootcamp Trainings Stack Up?
What exactly is military bootcamp training? Is it just a novelty that will quickly wear off? Well, with popularity of other workouts like cross-fit and Intensity…maybe not.
Military bootcamp training mixes good old-fashioned calisthenics and body weight exercises with strength training and interval training. They are designed to “push” you harder than what you are accustomed to, using group competitiveness and an “enforcer” (much like a sergeant).
Typically, classes run 4–8 weeks to gain optimum results, and may entail getting up at the crack of dawn (or earlier) to run a mile or two, do a series of plyometric exercises and interval training, sit ups and push-ups, and very little rest in between.
Hell week is optional!
Sound too intense for a military spouse or their kids? It isn’t for everyone, but for those who are motivated to get in shape and need a little motivation from a self-appointed drill sergeant, it’s a fantastic and inexpensive way to kick-start a fit lifestyle.
And the best part may be that you’re outdoors rather than confined in a gym. Be careful because it may just feel more like play than work…maybe.
What Can you Expect in Military Bootcamp Training Classes
The first day will most likely be about the details. You will probably review safety guidelines, fill out paperwork and receive a fitness assessment.
After that, the real fun begins. Each fitness session should start with a warm up of at least 10 minutes, which will be followed by a 30–40 minute workout that includes plyometrics, push-ups, interval training, thrusts, lunges, squats, speed training, team competitions, core strength, obstacle courses and a cool-down period.
At the end of the military bootcamp training, you’ll get another fitness assessment so you can really measure all the results.
There are also specialized military training classes available. Weight loss camps, kids fitness camps, boot camps for brides-to-be and sports-specific (soccer, running, skiing).
Are you afraid of getting yelled like that drill sergeant in the move “G.I. Jane”? Chances are you won’t find anyone nearly so intimidating–unless you want that, of course.
Most fitness boot camp instructors incorporate meditation, yoga, group interaction and positive encouragement. The goal is not to have you wash out. After all, you are a paying customer! But really, your coach wants you to succeed. They want you to stay with the program, finish it with a feeling of accomplishment, self-esteem and mental strength.
So if you know someone in your life that craves the challenges of military boot camp training encourage them to go for it. And, don’t forget the nutritional and dietary support that your body needs.
All the training in the world will not give you the results you really want if you don’t feed your muscles.
